What Your Transmission Fluid’s Appearance Can—and Cannot—Tell You

Fresh-looking red fluid is reassuring only when the rest of the evidence is also reassuring. Bright fluid containing metallic glitter or flakes deserves more concern than uniformly dark but transparent fluid with no burnt odor, debris, leak, or operating symptoms.

Pink requires particular care because two very different appearances can share that label. Clear, translucent pink may be exactly how the specified fluid should look.
