The 'Lifetime' Transmission Fluid Your Mercedes Actually Needs Changed
Why Mercedes called the 722.6 fluid lifetime, what it really needs, and the change procedure that keeps a W220-era transmission alive.

Mercedes shipped the W220 S-Class calling the 722.6 five-speed’s fluid a “lifetime fill.” Two decades of transmissions later, the verdict is in: the lifetime in question was the transmission’s, and it was shorter for the believers.
What “lifetime fill” actually meant
No service interval appeared in the schedule, the dipstick was deleted, and the tube got a locked cap — a marketing-era decision, not a chemistry one. ATF shears, oxidizes, and loads with clutch material like it always has. Mercedes’ own dealers quietly serviced fleets at 40k; the durable consensus for the 722.6 is fluid and filter roughly every 40,000–60,000 miles, sooner with towing or city crawling.
The failure pattern of the unmaintained ones is characteristic: harsh 2–3 shifts, flare on cold starts, then a limp-home default — usually pinned on the valve body or the infamous conductor plate, and often really a decade of dead fluid.
Doing it right
- Fluid: MB 236.10/236.12-approved ATF for the 722.6 (later 722.9 boxes take 236.14/236.15 — the specs are not interchangeable, and “universal” multi-vehicle ATF is how shudder gets introduced).
- Filter and pan gasket every time; the filter is inside the pan.
- The electrical connector sleeve — the pilot bushing where the harness enters the case — hardens and wicks ATF up into the shifter module and TCU connector. It costs a few dollars; replace it on every service and inspect the plug for red residue.
- Level is set by temperature, not a dipstick: filled through the tube, checked at spec temp (roughly 45°C) with the locked cap replaced after. The measuring dipstick is a cheap tool — buy it, don’t guess.
A drain-and-fill exchanges only ~40% (the converter holds the rest), so two services a few thousand miles apart beat one, and both beat a pressure flush on a neglected unit — the sediment a machine stirs loose has to land somewhere, and the valve body is downstream.
