What to Check When Your Parking Sensors Suddenly Stop Working

A “Park Assist Blocked—See Owner’s Manual” warning generally means the vehicle has made some or all parking-assist proximity alerts unavailable after detecting an obstruction or fault. It does not identify which sensor is affected—or prove that any particular sensor, wire, or control module has failed.

Begin with safe, no-tool checks: consult the exact owner’s manual, clean and dry every applicable sensor, close the tailgate, remove nearby attachments when practical, verify the system’s settings, and inspect the bumper for damage or poor sensor seating. If the warning remains or repeatedly returns in clean, dry conditions, the vehicle needs model-specific diagnosis rather than a speculative battery reset or parts replacement.

The strongest factory technical information available for this warning applies narrowly to specified 2010–2013 GM vehicles with rear parking assist RPO UD7. Its sensor counts, operating speeds, diagnostic procedures, and repair criteria must not be generalized to newer GM vehicles, front parking sensors, Mercedes-Benz PARKTRONIC, or other manufacturers’ systems.

What the “Park Assist Blocked” message means

Parking-assist systems help detect objects near a vehicle during low-speed maneuvering. Many use small ultrasonic sensors mounted in the front or rear bumper cover. A sensor emits sound waves and interprets their reflections; the vehicle may then warn the driver through tones, distance graphics, or both.

That description is only a general model. Sensor quantity, placement, controls, operating conditions, displays, and relationships with other driver-assistance features vary by make, model, year, trim, and equipment package.

When “Park Assist Blocked—See Owner’s Manual” appears, the vehicle has generally stopped providing some or all proximity warnings because it detected either an obstruction or a system fault. The message is a status warning, not a component diagnosis. Possible explanations include contamination, physical damage, incorrect sensor mounting, a poor electrical connection, or another vehicle-specific problem.

The clearest manufacturer guidance in the evidence applies to specified 2010–2013 Cadillac Escalade; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra and Yukon models equipped with rear parking assist RPO UD7. On those systems, rear parking assist is disabled while the message is displayed. The system described has four rear-bumper sensors and operates in Reverse below 5 mph, but those specifications belong only to the vehicles covered by the bulletin. Do not assume every driver-assistance feature has stopped working. In one report involving a 2011 truck, the rearview camera continued to display an image while the ultrasonic backup warnings were unavailable. That anecdote shows that the symptoms can be separated; it does not identify the cause. Read the owner’s description of the camera and warning behavior.

The useful interpretation is therefore simple: treat the affected parking-assist alerts as unavailable until normal operation is confirmed, but do not replace a component based on the dashboard wording alone.

Can you keep driving with parking assist unavailable?

The message concerns a parking-assistance function, but it does not establish the condition of every other system on every vehicle.

While the warning is active:

  • Do not rely on proximity tones.
  • Do not rely on distance bars or obstacle graphics.
  • Do not assume the vehicle will detect an object automatically.
  • Walk around the vehicle before moving when conditions permit.
  • Use the mirrors and look in the direction of travel.
  • Treat a functioning camera as a supplemental view, not proof that the area is clear.

Stop and inspect before maneuvering if you cannot confirm that the area around the vehicle is clear. Also stop if the bumper cover or nearby trim is loose, wiring is exposed, or an attachment appears capable of detaching or striking another object. Those conditions may present concerns beyond the loss of proximity warnings.

If the park-assist message appears with braking, steering, transmission, airbag, stability-control, or other electrical warnings, do not assume the messages have a common harmless cause. Follow the owner’s manual instructions for each warning and obtain appropriate assistance when necessary.

The five-minute first-response checklist

These are the first checks to begin before scheduling a repair. Depending on the vehicle, locating every sensor, consulting the manual, or removing an attachment may take more than five minutes.

  4. Inspect for visible contamination.   6. Close the tailgate. On systems where a lowered tailgate enters the sensing area or changes detection, closing it may restore normal operation. Test with the tailgate fully closed unless the manual instructs otherwise.

If a straightforward correction restores operation, monitor the system. A warning that promptly returns in clean, dry conditions points beyond a temporary visible obstruction.

Owner discussions include reports of warnings disappearing after sensors thawed or dried. These experiences make frozen contamination and moisture reasonable first checks, but they do not prove that low temperature alone causes the warning. Reports involving hitches are also inconsistent. Some owners associated the warning with an installed hitch or trailer, while others used the same hitch without repeated warnings. Removing an attachment is useful for testing whether the behavior changes, but it does not establish the condition of the sensors, wiring, or controller.

How to inspect sensors and recent bumper work

A clean sensor face does not rule out physical trouble. The visible disc is only one part of the installation. Correct operation can also depend on the sensor’s seating, orientation, retainer, bezel, wiring, and the shape of the surrounding bumper.

Stand where light reflects across the bumper and compare the sensors with one another. Look for consistency rather than assuming every design must sit perfectly flush.

A sensor deserves closer inspection if it appears:

  • Pushed inward or recessed
  • Farther out than the others
  • Crooked or rotated
  • Loose in its opening
  • Pulled against one side of its retainer
  • Surrounded by a broken or missing bezel

Do not crawl beneath an inadequately supported vehicle or reach near hot, moving, or energized components.

It also specifies replacement for certain scratched, chipped, or overpainted sensor conditions. Those replacement criteria apply only to the covered GM systems and must not be transferred automatically to another vehicle, a newer system, or a front sensor.

Do not pry out, rotate, sand, paint, swap, or replace a sensor as an experiment. Mounting direction, retaining hardware, removal procedures, and post-repair requirements vary.

When the problem is electrical, calibration-related, or software-related

If every applicable sensor is clean and dry, the tailgate is closed, attachments have been removed or accounted for, settings are correct, and no physical damage is visible, further diagnosis may need to consider:

  • Damaged, pinched, corroded, or open wiring
  • Loose or poor electrical connections
  • A failed ultrasonic sensor
  • Incorrect installation or orientation
  • A calibration or configuration error
  • A programming or software problem
  • A control-module or communication fault

The dashboard message cannot distinguish among these possibilities. An internally failed sensor may look normal, while a loose connection or incorrect mount may produce a similar warning. A system-wide message also does not prove that the control module has failed.

Intermittent operation is not proof that the system is sound. If the warning repeatedly appears after selecting a gear or returns in clean, dry conditions, record the circumstances and arrange diagnosis even if the feature sometimes recovers.

Owner reports illustrate why isolated repairs cannot be generalized. In one 2016 Chevrolet Volt case, the owner said dealer recalibration restored operation. Another participant attributed a separate problem to poor wiring contact at a front sensor. A further report described continuing failures after module replacement, calibration, and connection checks. In another forum discussion, an owner said a parking-assist problem following retrofit work was corrected when a dealer addressed an update or programming issue. Accordingly:

  • A battery disconnect is not a verified universal repair.
  • Recalibration does not correct every cause.
  • A software update is appropriate only when applicable to the vehicle and diagnosed symptom.
  • Module replacement is not justified by the warning alone.
  • Some replacement modules may require vehicle-specific programming, but that requirement varies.
  • A sensor should not be ordered merely because it appears closest to an obstacle or warning graphic.

A temporarily cleared message does not establish that the underlying cause has been corrected.

What a proper professional diagnosis should include

Arrange professional diagnosis when:

  • Cleaning and drying do not restore operation.
  • The warning repeatedly returns in clean, dry conditions.
  • A sensor face or bumper is damaged.
  • A sensor appears loose, recessed, crooked, or displaced.
  • The bumper cover or trim is loose.
  • The symptoms began after an impact.
  • The symptoms began after bumper removal, repair, or repainting.
  • The warning began after a retrofit or software change.
  • The problem has existed since vehicle delivery.
  • Other warnings or electrical symptoms are present.

Diagnosis should begin with the physical system rather than immediate parts replacement. Ask the technician to inspect:

  • Sensor faces
  • Sensor mounting depth and orientation
  • Retainers and bezels
  • Bumper shape and fascia condition
  • Visible wiring and connectors
  • Nearby hitches, racks, carriers, or other attachments
  • Recent body or accessory work

The technician should then use diagnostic equipment capable of communicating with the applicable parking-assist or body-control system, rather than relying only on a basic engine-code reader. What information is available varies by vehicle, but model-specific diagnosis may include applicable fault codes, system history, sensor information, communication checks, wiring tests, configuration status, or software identification.

For the GM rear systems covered by the technical bulletin, factory instructions direct technicians to examine diagnostic trouble codes and Park Assist Disable History as well as the physical installation. That covered system stores the seven previous reasons parking assistance was disabled. This can be useful when the message has disappeared before the appointment, although the recorded reason must still be interpreted alongside inspection findings.

A reported lack of stored codes should not automatically end the investigation. One owner described a dealer observing the warning without stored codes. Because that is an anecdotal case, it does not establish how every vehicle behaves; it does show why a technician may still need to inspect sensor mounting, wiring, connectors, and relevant configuration or programming when the warning is reproducible.

Ask the shop to check the following as applicable:

  1. VIN-specific owner information and wiring diagrams
  2. Diagnostic, removal, and installation procedures
  3. Applicable technical service bulletins
  4. Open recalls or service campaigns
  5. Available software or configuration updates
  6. Repair information related to prior bumper or retrofit work
  7. Setup or programming requirements for any proposed replacement part

The remedy should follow the verified cause. Depending on the vehicle and findings, it may involve cleaning, closing the tailgate, changing a documented setting, removing an interfering attachment, repairing a retainer, correcting sensor orientation, repairing bumper damage, securing a connector, repairing wiring, completing applicable programming, or replacing a confirmed damaged component.

Before authorizing a sensor or module replacement, ask what inspection or test result supports it. The dashboard wording alone is not sufficient evidence.

What to document before your service appointment

Intermittent faults are easier to investigate when the shop receives a precise timeline. Prepare a short written record.

Record the vehicle and system details:

  • Exact warning wording
  • Make, model, model year, and trim
  • VIN
  • Whether the vehicle has front sensors, rear sensors, or both
  • Whether the system is factory-installed or retrofitted
  • Recent software, body, accessory, or electrical work

Record when the warning appears:

  • Immediately at startup
  • After selecting Reverse
  • After selecting Drive
  • Only during low-speed maneuvering
  • After driving for a period
  • Continuously
  • Intermittently
  • Only on the first trip of the day
  • After rain, washing, freezing weather, or a temperature change

Note recent events that may be relevant:

  • Freezing rain, snow, frost, or slush
  • Heavy rain or standing water
  • Automatic or hand car wash
  • Mud, road film, salt, dust, or off-road use
  • Towing
  • Driving with the tailgate lowered
  • Installation of a hitch, rack, carrier, step, or other accessory
  • Minor collision or bumper contact
  • Bumper removal or replacement
  • Painting or cosmetic repair
  • Sensor replacement
  • Parking-assist retrofit

List installed attachments and relevant settings. Note whether a hitch receiver remains installed even when nothing is attached. Record the selected trailer, towing, or park-assist mode where equipped.

Photograph every sensor and the surrounding bumper. Include close-ups and wider views showing:

  • Dents or bumper distortion
  • Scratches, chips, cracks, or gouges
  • Heavy or uneven paint
  • A sensor sitting differently from the others
  • Broken trim, bezels, or retainers
  • Loose fascia
  • The position of a hitch, rack, trailer, or carrier

Record the result of each safe check. State whether the behavior changed after cleaning, drying, thawing, closing the tailgate, selecting a documented setting, or removing an attachment. Avoid repeated, unverified battery resets or generic clearing procedures; they are not established repairs for this warning.

Also note whether the rearview camera and other assistance features still work. That information can help define which functions are affected, but it does not identify the failed component.

For warranty questions, ask the dealer or warranty administrator for a written coverage determination tied to the diagnosed cause and the applicable warranty or service-contract terms. A forum report that one programming repair was covered does not establish coverage for another vehicle, physical damage, or a different repair.

Will the warning clear after I clean or thaw the sensors?

It may. If snow, ice, slush, mud, water, or residue is obstructing a sensor, gentle cleaning followed by drying or thawing may allow the system to resume operation. Owner forums contain reports of warnings disappearing after warmer weather or drying, but those reports do not establish a universal outcome.

There is no supported universal clearing time, driving speed, ignition-cycle count, or reset procedure. If the warning remains after every applicable sensor is clean and dry—or repeatedly returns in good conditions—inspect for physical damage and arrange vehicle-specific diagnosis.

Can a trailer hitch or lowered tailgate trigger “Park Assist Blocked”?

They can interfere with some systems. A hitch, trailer, rack, step, carrier, lowered tailgate, or similar object may enter a rear sensor’s field or affect operation. The GM bulletin covering the specified 2010–2013 rear systems lists attached objects and tailgate position among its checks.

Close the tailgate and remove the attachment when practical and safe. Verify any trailer or towbar setting in the exact owner’s manual. Do not assume hitch removal will solve every case; owner reports are inconsistent, and another fault may be present.

Why does the rearview camera work when the parking sensors do not?

A camera may therefore continue displaying an image while proximity tones or distance graphics are unavailable.

A working camera does not prove the parking sensors are functioning, and the park-assist warning does not necessarily mean the camera has failed. Continue to check the vehicle’s surroundings directly.

Can the warning appear without a stored diagnostic code?

At least one owner reported that a dealer could observe the warning even though no diagnostic codes were reportedly stored. That is an anecdotal example, not proof that every vehicle can produce the warning without codes.

Applicable codes, system history, and other scan-tool information may still be useful. A reported no-code result should not automatically be treated as proof that sensor mounting, wiring, connections, configuration, calibration, or programming are correct.

Is a damaged sensor, programming repair, or retrofit issue covered under warranty?

Possibly, but the warning itself does not determine coverage.

A reported programming correction after retrofit work does not establish coverage for impact damage, another retrofit, or a different vehicle. Request the diagnosis and coverage decision in writing before authorizing work.

The decision rule is straightforward: clean and dry every applicable sensor, remove obvious interference, close the tailgate, verify settings in the exact owner’s manual, and inspect for damage or poor seating. If the message remains or returns without an obvious obstruction, stop guessing and request vehicle-specific physical inspection, scan-tool diagnosis, and a check for applicable software and service information. Until normal operation is confirmed, maneuver by direct observation rather than relying on parking-assist alerts.
