W220 Fuse Box Diagram: Find the Right Panel and Circuit
Find W220 fuse-panel locations, build-date charts, common fuse numbers and ratings, plus the key differences between early and facelift cars.
Match the fuse chart to the car before pulling a fuse. The W220 has two main fuse boxes in the engine compartment and one beneath the right rear seat. Facelift cars also have a fuse box at the passenger-side end of the dashboard; pre-facelift cars do not. Several circuit assignments changed, so a single “1999–2005” diagram is not a reliable universal reference. W220 fuse reference
Choose the correct fuse chart
First look in the vehicle tool kit in the trunk’s spare-wheel well. Mercedes supplied a chart showing fuse allocations and amperages, together with spare fuses and an extractor. Use that chart if it matches the vehicle. 2005 Mercedes S-Class operator’s manual, pp. 379–380 and 411
If it is missing, these archived charts provide the circuit lookup. The build-date periods below are those listed in the W220 chart catalogue, not registration-year ranges.
| Listed build-date applicability | Chart part number and reference |
|---|---|
| Up to 30 June 2001 | A0005451500 — compact circuit-assignment chart; replaces A0005451400 |
| From 30 June 2001 to 30 September 2002 | A0005451600 — panel layouts, relays and circuit assignments |
| From 30 September 2002 to 30 September 2003 | A0005451700 — compact fuse and relay lookup |
| From 28 October 2003 | A0005451800 — panel layouts, relays and circuit assignments |
For a car at a changeover date—or in the catalogue’s September–October 2003 gap—ask a Mercedes parts or service department to confirm the chart by VIN rather than guessing. Also match the engine, market and fitted equipment; the later chart lists alternative engine-management and fuel-pump assignments.
Fuse-box locations and layout references
Left and right mean the vehicle’s sides when seated facing forward, not when standing in front of the bonnet. Do not substitute “driver side” for “left” on a right-hand-drive car.
| Panel | Where to find it | Fuse numbers | Relay letters / layout reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Left engine-compartment box, F1 | Near the firewall, vehicle left | f1–f27 | A–J; left-panel layout |
| Right engine-compartment box, F1/1 | Near the firewall, vehicle right | f28–f49 | K–P; right-panel layout |
| Rear fuse/relay module, K40/5 | Beneath the right rear seat, behind its access cover | f50–f77 | Q–U; rear-panel layout |
| Cockpit box, F3 — facelift | Passenger-side end of dashboard: right on LHD, left on RHD | f78–f86 | dashboard layout |
The later reference also shows an additional f87–f91 / V–X engine-compartment group labelled “only 12 cylinder/AMG.” Do not expect it on every W220 or apply its assignments without checking the engine-specific diagram. Mercedes chart A0005451800
Use the numbered layout, not a count of occupied slots. A fuse number such as f32 identifies a position; a letter such as O identifies a relay.
Common facelift fuse assignments
This quick lookup uses the later A0005451700 and A0005451800 circuit assignments, with ratings from the W220 Encyclopedia’s facelift fuse tables. It is not an early-car replacement chart. Confirm the specified rating on your car’s chart before replacement.
| Circuit | Fuse number and rating | Panel |
|---|---|---|
| Windscreen wipers | f5 — 40A; f78 — 7.5A | Left engine / dashboard |
| Windscreen washer | f10 — 15A | Left engine |
| Brake-light switch | f16 — 7.5A | Left engine |
| COMAND/navigation | f22 — 7.5A; 15A listed for Japan | Left engine |
| CD changer / TV | f23 — 7.5A | Left engine |
| Audio gateway / car audio | f24 — 20A | Left engine |
| Sound system | f25 — 25A | Left engine |
| Horns | f28 — 15A | Right engine |
| AIRMATIC compressor | f32 — 40A | Right engine |
| Front climate-control blower | f33 — 40A | Right engine |
| Transmission control | f37 — 15A | Right engine |
| ABC/AIRMATIC control supplies | f9 — 20A; f46 — 5A | Left / right engine |
| Fuel pump, standard later-chart assignment | f52 — 30A | Rear |
| Rear-window defroster | f53 — 50A; f82 — 10A | Rear / dashboard |
| Central locking | f62 — 20A | Rear |
| Parktronic | f75 — 10A; f80 — 10A | Rear / dashboard |
| Sunroof / overhead lighting | f77 — 40A | Rear |
| Instrument cluster | f79 — 5A; f84 — 5A; f85 — 5A | Dashboard |
| Diagnostic socket | f81 — 10A; f84 — 5A | Dashboard |
| Front cigarette lighter | f86 — 15A | Dashboard |
Useful relay letters are L: starter, O: air suspension, P: horns, T: fuel pump and U: rear-window heater. The 1800 chart also lists f91 and relay X for the AMG fuel-pump circuit; check applicability before using the standard f52/T assignment. Mercedes chart A0005451800
Early-car assignments that differ
These examples show why the dashboard-box change matters. They compare the early A0005451500 lookup with the later charts; use the matching build-period chart for the complete list and amperages.
| Circuit | Early 1500 chart | Later 1700/1800 charts |
|---|---|---|
| Front cigarette lighter | f11 | f86 |
| Diagnostic socket | f20, f24 | f81, f84 |
| Instrument cluster | f20, f21, f22 | f79, f84, f85 |
| Navigation | f61 | f22 |
| Radio/COMAND/sound | f61, f66 | Separate f22, f24 and f25 assignments |
Access and replacement stop points
Switch off the ignition and remove the key before removing a fuse. W220 fuse-service guidance
On facelift cars, open the front passenger door to reach the dashboard cover. Mercedes specifies a flat, blunt lever, not a sharp screwdriver. The engine-compartment covers use sliding locks; refit and lock them correctly to keep moisture and dirt out. Operator’s manual, pp. 412–413
Replace a blown fuse only with the specified type and amperage. Never bridge it or fit a higher-rated fuse. If the replacement blows, stop and investigate the circuit rather than feeding it more fuses. Mercedes explicitly warns against repairing or bridging a fuse because of electrical-damage and fire risks. Operator’s manual, p. 411
Not every failed lamp has a removable blade fuse: the Mercedes chart labels many lighting outputs “electronic fuse.” Separate high-current prefuse blocks also exist beneath the passenger footwell carpet and behind the right trunk lining; they are outside the normal f1–f86 lookup. Do not treat those battery-distribution connections as ordinary fuse-pulling work. Electronic protection and prefuse locations
If your task is isolating battery drain rather than replacing a blown fuse, use the separate W220 parasitic-draw testing procedure.
