What does W220 AIRMATIC repair cost? Price the failed part first
W220 AIRMATIC parts prices, worked labor-cost examples, core charges and the checks that make DIY and workshop quotes comparable.

For a Mercedes W220, the AIRMATIC repair cost depends on what has actually failed. The replacement examples below put one air strut at about $453–$627, a WABCO compressor at $537 and an aftermarket valve block at $160, before installation and other charges. These are specific retail listings—not a price range covering every brand or a complete workshop bill.
This guide uses US-dollar prices checked on November 3, 2026, principally for 2000–2006-model-year S430 and S500 cars with AIRMATIC. Prices exclude taxes and any shipping charges. Confirm the VIN, suspension system and rear-wheel drive versus 4MATIC before comparing prices. A W220 with option code 487 has hydraulic ABC suspension, so these AIRMATIC parts and costs do not apply. See the W220 suspension-system distinction.
W220 replacement-parts prices
| Confirmed repair | Retail example | Price and core charge |
|---|---|---|
| Front air strut, without 4MATIC | Remanufactured Arnott AS-2193 at Pelican Parts | $488.50 each, plus $60 core deposit |
| Rear air strut | Remanufactured Arnott AS-2194 at ShockWarehouse | $502.59 paid initially; $452.59 after the $50 core refund |
| Front-left air strut, 4MATIC | New Aerosus strut with ADS, W220-specific listing | $627 sale price; $705 regular price |
| Air-suspension compressor | Arnott/WABCO P-2192 at Michigan Truck Spring | $537.37; listing includes the air dryer |
| Valve block | Aerosus W220 AIRMATIC block, reference A2203200258 | $160 sale price; $200 regular price; includes pressure sensor |
These examples are not interchangeable purchasing recommendations. Arnott’s AS-2193 installation manual explicitly specifies W220 AIRMATIC without 4MATIC. The rear AS-2194 retailer lists both rear-wheel-drive and 4MATIC S430/S500 applications. Have the supplier confirm your exact fitment rather than trusting the “S-Class” description alone.
A core deposit is money tied up until the old unit is accepted for return. Keep the required packaging, confirm the return deadline and ask who pays return shipping. Pelican specifically requires its AS-2193 core to be returned in the original box.
Turn the parts price into a workshop budget
Use this calculation:
Fitted cost = quoted part price + billed hours × hourly rate + diagnosis + required extras + taxes/fees.
For a rear-wheel-drive W220 needing one AS-2193 front strut, the arithmetic looks like this:
| Illustrative labor quote | Part plus installation labor | Initial amount including $60 core deposit |
|---|---|---|
| 2 hours at $150/hour | $788.50 | $848.50 |
| 3 hours at $200/hour | $1,088.50 | $1,148.50 |
Those hours and rates are worked examples, not Mercedes labor-book times or surveyed local rates. Substitute the workshop’s written figures. Both totals still exclude diagnosis, shipping, tax, fees and any separately quoted alignment or ride-height work.
For a model-specific diagnostic benchmark, RepairPal lists $61–$90 for S430 active-suspension diagnosis and testing, updated September 3, 2026, excluding taxes and fees and without accounting for your location. That does not promise a complete intermittent-fault investigation or overnight leak test within that amount; agree the initial diagnostic scope and spending limit with the shop. Shop-supplied parts may be priced differently from online retail. Compare the same brand, part number, quantity and warranty, then ask whether the shop accepts owner-supplied parts and what happens if one fails.
For scale, two AS-2193 fronts and two AS-2194 rears total about $1,882 in parts after core refunds. Adding the listed WABCO compressor brings that to about $2,420 before labor and extras. That is a parts-shopping calculation for a non-4MATIC car, not a reason to authorize a whole-system replacement.
What a worthwhile quote should include
Before approving a four-figure bill, ask for:
- The confirmed fault: the leaking component or the electrical/pressure-test result—not just “car sits low.”
- Exact replacement scope: one corner, an axle pair, compressor, valve block or a combination, with the reason for each item.
- Labor hours and rate: diagnosis separated from replacement, with any shared labor accounted for.
- Related work: air-line fittings, relay, mounting hardware, alignment or calibration identified rather than hidden in “AIRMATIC repair.”
- Verification: leak checking and confirmation that the system raises and holds the vehicle correctly.
A compressor quote deserves particular scrutiny if the car also leaks. Arnott’s P-2192 instructions require cracked air springs to be replaced to validate the compressor warranty. A new compressor alone is not a complete repair when a failed spring remains.
If the cause is still only suspected, use the W220 AIRMATIC fault-diagnosis guide before ordering expensive parts. If calibration is separately quoted, ask what makes it necessary and what measurements will be verified; the W220 ride-height calibration guide explains that work.
DIY versus paying a specialist
DIY removes the workshop’s installation charge, but the retail part price is only the starting budget. Include core deposits, suitable lifting equipment, tools, diagnostic access and any professional checks you still need. In the two-hour example above, the installation-labor difference is $300—not the entire fitted bill.
Do not treat a strut swap as an ordinary unpressurized shock replacement. Arnott warns that the system can hold up to 10 bar/150 psi, requires pressure relief and power isolation before disassembly, and specifies qualified personnel and manufacturer diagnostic software. Never work beneath a car supported only by its air suspension or an inadequately supported jack. Arnott W220 front-strut instructions
If you cannot safely support, depressurize and verify the system, paying a Mercedes-capable specialist is the better comparison. The useful saving is avoiding unnecessary parts—not merely finding the lowest advertised strut price.
